“The ‘price’ of semiconductor determines the signs of recovery in domestic demand more than the stock price”

Bank of Korea’s president Shin Hyunsong’s speaking that people need to pay attention to the price fluctuation of the semiconductor than the stock price of the semiconductor industries such as Samsung Electronics or SK Hynix in the situation where the ‘semiconductor power’ is leading Korea’s economy, is getting spotlighted. It is an analysis that the riffle effect of domestic demand may change depending on how high the semiconductor price is and how long it maintains its price. On July 16th, after the Bank of Korea announced that it would raise the base interest rate by 0.25% point, governor Shin Hyunsong said that, in establishing monetary policy, they are paying much more attention to the semiconductor price itself than the stock prices of companies. It means the semiconductor price is the key variable that determines Korea’s terms of trade. An increase in semiconductor prices leads to higher profits and expanded orders for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which in turn supports the domestic economy through wage increase and other income growth. Since major semiconductor contracts are present through business-to-business (B2B) transactions, the prices do not appear in the spot market, but are mostly made under long-term contracts, making them difficult to identify. Nevertheless, they are regarded as one of the most important factors for predicting the future of Korea’s economy.Due to the impact of rising semiconductor prices, Korea’s real gross domestic income (GDI) growth rate recorded exceptional 13.2% in the first quarter of the year. During the same period, the gross domestic product(GDP) growth rate was 3.8%. The gap between the two growth rates (9.4 % points) marked the largest difference since related statistics began to be collected in 1960.The report pointed out that the biggest reason behind the sharp rise in GDI was the improvement driven by rising export prices. Looking at the periods of economic improvement in 2009, 2015~2016, and 2020, the major factors were falling international oil prices and lower import prices caused by the global financial crisis, the pandemic (the state when the infectious disease become widespread wordwide across politics, economy, and society), and the U.S. shale boom. Recently, however, even amid soaring international oil prices due to the war between the United States and Iran, rising semiconductor prices have been leading the improvement in the terms of trade.According to an empirical analysis conducted by the Korea Bank, in the past when lower import prices led the improvement in the terms of trade, households regarded it as a ‘temporary increase in income’, causing a weak effect on private consumption. As people did not expect their income to continue increasing, households placed more weight on saving than spending. On the other hand, when higher export prices lead changes in the terms of trade, the spillover effect on income becomes much stronger through higher wages driven from expanded sales. As the belief that income will continue to increase grows, private consumption also recovers. In fact, due to the recent announcements of large-scale performance bonuses by semiconductor companies, the overall wage growth rate has become significantly higher than during previous periods of improvement in the terms of trade. During the period of rising import prices, companies also respond to expanding global demand by rapidly increasing production capacity, immediately leading expanded investment. However, it also pointed out that behind the unprecedented semiconductor boom and the sharp rise in GDI lies the risk of increasing economic polarization. This is because such a trend may increase overall macroeconomic volatility and undermine the economy’s medium to long-term growth potential. The growth of the semiconductor industry has caused the Information Technology (IT) manufacturing sector in Korea’s total manufacturing output to rise 51%, further intensifying the concentration of industrial production. Since the IT manufacturing industry has relatively low production and employment multiplier effects, and workers in related industries account for only 2.6% of total employment, the benefits of growth may become concentrated among employees of a small number of large corporations. A financial investment industry official explained, “If the effects of large performance bonuses and wage increases are limited to only a few major companies, it is difficult for the benefits to spread throughout the overall economy,” adding “Non-IT sectors may instead face sluggish business conditions and rising cost pressures.”The concentration of growth itself in a specific industry may become a problem. In the case of semiconductors, the industry is highly affected by demand cycles, meaning that investment and tax revenues can fluctuate significantly depending on changes in demand.Researcher from Bank of Korea stated, “As tax revenues become increasingly dependent on the semiconductor industry, fiscal capacity may fluctuate greatly depending on the semiconductor business cycle. After the surge in tax revenues generated during the IT boom of 2021~2022, they quickly turned into tax revenue shortfalls during the subsequent industry downturn,” adding “It is necessary to consider the risk that Korea’s high dependence on the IT industry could amplify volatility in the economy, public finances, and financial markets, and to draft medium and long-term policies accordingly.”▶원문 기사: “주가보다 반도체 ‘가격’이 내수 온기 가른다” (이코노미스트, 2026. 7. 20) ◆이코노미스트가 글로벌 차세대 경제 리더, 청소년 기자단 영 저널리스트와 함께합니다.

MFDS Warns Against “Misuse of Wegovy and Mounjaro”... Precautions for Overseas Purchases and Youth Use

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has urged the public to use GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) obesity medications, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, with caution, within the approved indications and dosage. Recently, these drugs have gained popularity, known as "diet drugs," leading to an increase in use among youths, overseas direct purchases, and unauthorized advertising. On the 8th, the MFDS stated that "a series of GLP-1 obesity medications are aimed at obesity patients and should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional in accordance with the approved dosage and administration."A series of GLP-1 obesity medications work by activating the action of the GLP-1 hormone, which helps regulate insulin secretion and appetite, resulting in weight loss. Notable example products include Wegovy, which contains semaglutide, and Mounjaro, containing tirzepatide. These medications are approved for obese adults with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, or for overweight adults with a BMI between 27 kg/m² and 30 kg/m², while having at least one weight-related medical condition, such as hypertension. The MFDS also emphasized that even when products approved for youth use are prescribed, careful attention must be paid to the risk of insufficient nutrition and excessive weight loss during growth. Moreover, healthcare providers should closely monitor patients for gastrointestinal side effects that may lead to dehydration or acute pancreatitis. The MFDS expressed particular concern about the misuse of a series of GLP-1 obesity medications as they are perceived as simple "diet drugs." They emphasized that these medications must only be used with a physician's prescription and under the guidance of a pharmacist, and should never be purchased through overseas direct purchases or private transactions.Products obtained through overseas direct purchases have not been approved for use in South Korea, meaning their safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently verified. In addition, their manufacturing and distribution processes are hard to verify, which raises the risk that they may be counterfeit medicines or substandard products. They also warned that consumers may not be protected by legal measures, such as product recalls or compensation, even if they experience the damage after using these products.MFDS plans to produce informational content, such as card news and short-form videos centered on Social Networking Service (SNS), to promote the safe use of GLP-1 obesity medications. MFDS will also collaborate with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family to provide information on websites frequently used by youths and parents.Along with this, the MFDS will conduct intensive inspections of local governments, medical institutions, and pharmacies to identify unauthorized advertising and exaggerated promotional claims within obesity medications. These appropriate follow-up measures will be taken against any violations. An official from MFDS stated, "MFDS will continue to improve users' understanding of obesity medications and provide guidance continuously on their safe use within the scope of their authorized indications, creating an environment that supports the safe use of pharmaceuticals."▶원문 기사:식약처 "위고비·마운자로 오남용 우려"…

Chey Tae-won: “Semiconductor demand is in chaos… Supply shortages will worsen next year.”

Chey Tae-won, chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and SK Group, predicted that the imbalance between supply and demand for memory semiconductors will worsen next year due to the continuous expansion of artificial intelligence (AI), and announced plans to consider constructing semiconductor plants in locations from the Honam region in Korea to the United States to expand production capacity. Chey emphasized that prices must be stabilized by increasing supply, saying, “There are projections that demand will increase by at least 60–100% next year compared to this year.” At a press conference held during the 49th KCCI Jeju Forum at the Shilla Jeju hotel on July 15, Chey said, “I am not sure if I should go as far as to describe the situation as ‘complete chaos’,” adding, “From a company’s perspective, semiconductor demand continues to surge, so factories need to be built quickly.”He assessed that “virtually no semiconductor company will significantly increase its supply next year”, and that “the gap between demand and supply will inevitably widen much further next year than this year.” He further emphasized that the “supply-demand gap could develop into an even greater problem, as governments need to secure memory semiconductors for their domestic companies to continue production in the interest of economic security.”He also left open the possibility of building production facilities in the United States. Regarding U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s call for Korean semiconductor companies to invest in the United States, he said, “He has been saying the same thing. It is nothing surprising,” adding, “I believe that if possible, we should build facilities in the United States as well.”Regarding the KRW 1,000 trillion AI data center project being pursued with the government, he explained, “You cannot build an AI Data center without customers. If it has been built, that means there are already customers,” and “Building a facility with a capacity of about 1 gigawatt costs KRW 70 trillion, and no one does this entirely with their own capital; it relies on project financing.” He added, “Under the financing conditions, the contract term cannot be shorter than at least five years, and for a longer arrangement, a 15-year long-term contract must exist before we can say that the project has taken off.”Regarding investment in the Honam region, he explained, “The government determined that Honam was the best location , and we announced the investment plan based on the assessment that it was necessary,” adding, “Once the project actually begins, unexpected obstacles or other issues could arise.”Meanwhile, Chey expressed the view that the recently increasing surging prices of memory semiconductors actually need to be lowered. He said, “This may sound strange, but current prices are abnormal and already too high,” adding, “If we face problems related to chip inflation, we (the semiconductor suppliers) become the target of criticism.” He added, “We need to increase supply now and bring prices down.”▶원문 기사: 최태원 "반도체 수요 아비규환…

"Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 5,000... Concerns Grow Over a 'Super El Niño'"

The scale of devastation caused by the series of powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month continues to grow. With the officially confirmed death toll already exceeding 5,000, concerns are mounting that the anticipated arrival of El Niño, a climate phenomenon associated with extreme weather, could further worsen living conditions for thousands of displaced residents staying in temporary shelters.According to AFP on July 18, Jorge Rodríguez, President of Venezuela's National Assembly, announced that the officially confirmed death toll had reached 5,069 as of July 17 (local time). The number of injured remained unchanged at 16,740, and Rodríguez stated that most of the injured have already been discharged from hospitals. The disaster began on June 24, when two powerful earthquakes measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela in quick succession. The coastal state of La Guaira, located just north of the capital, Caracas, suffered the heaviest damage and was left in ruins. Authorities reported that at least 300 victims remain unidentified, and officials are collecting DNA samples before burying the bodies in a public cemetery.Efforts to determine the exact number of missing people have been complicated by the lack of official government statistics. While the Venezuelan government has not released an official figure, opposition groups estimate that around 30,000 people are missing. The United Nations estimated the number of missing at 50,000 just three days after the earthquakes, on June 27. Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey previously warned that the final death toll could range anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000.Amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has warned that El Niño could bring an even greater disaster to those displaced by the earthquakes. Lucas Gejis Acrat, the IOM's Disaster Risk Reduction Coordinator in Venezuela, said that discussions are underway within the United Nations regarding the possibility of a very strong El Niño developing. He warned that, with many residents already homeless, an El Niño event could severely impact Venezuela. The unusually warm ocean surface temperatures associated with El Niño are expected to increase the likelihood of extreme weather events such as floods and droughts. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has also stated that there is a 63% chance that current conditions will develop into a "Super El Niño," defined as tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures exceeding the seasonal average by more than 2°C.▶원문 기사: 베네수엘라 지진 사망자 5000명 넘어서…'

Inventory becomes Marketing…Cafe 24, Changes How It Operates Shopping Malls

According to Cafe24, inventory is no longer just merchandise sitting in a warehouse. It has become a key source of data that directly influences advertising efficiency and sales. As a result, the way online shopping malls are managed is evolving. On the 1st, Cafe24 announced that online stores adopting its AI-powered Inventory-based Marketing (AIM) service, which integrates real-time inventory data into advertising operations have improved their inventory turnover efficiency. Inventory-based Marketing is a service that analyzes product inventory levels and sales trends in real time and reflects that information in advertising campaigns. Products with sufficient stock receive increased advertising exposure, while products nearing stock depletion have their exposure reduced, enabling merchants to use their advertising budgets more efficiently. The online shopping mall management team’s inventory management a challenge that has been difficult to solve for a long time. The items that were almost out of stock were always on the ads and the ones that had a lot in stock weren't shown in ads, which created unnecessary advertisement fees in many cases. Their original method of handling the advertisements and inventory separately has shown a boundary, and they are leaning toward a production environment where they analyze the product and the actual stock of that product together. In line with this trend, Cafe24 provides an operating environment that analyzes advertising performance alongside inventory data. According to the company, faster inventory turnover allows merchants to recover sales revenue more quickly, enabling them to reinvest those funds in new product development or additional marketing initiatives. One example is the women's fashion online store Meriet, which linked inventory analysis with its ordering process after adopting AIM. As a result, its inventory turnover rate more than doubled, increasing from 9.2 to 20.7 times. Meanwhile, the average inventory depletion period was reduced by more than half, from 39.8 days to 17.6 days. Meriet CEO Ji-su Yoo said, “By analyzing inventory and purchase order data together, we were able to respond to surges in demand without running out of stock. We generated more sales from the same inventory while actually reducing the risk of stockouts.” This trend was observed not only in individual cases but also across online stores that adopted the service. Cafe24 compared performance before and after implementation among online stores connected to a Warehouse Management System (WMS) that enables real-time inventory analysis. The results showed that the average inventory turnover rate increased by 12%, while the average inventory depletion period decreased by 22%. According to the company, faster inventory turnover also made it easier for merchants to plan and prepare inventory for upcoming seasonal products. Looking ahead, Cafe24 plans to continue enhancing its marketing services by further linking advertising operations with product and inventory data. A company representative said, “The competitiveness of an online store depends not only on how effectively it runs advertising campaigns, but also on how efficiently it utilizes data. We will continue strengthening our integrated operating environment by connecting sales, inventory, and advertising data.

“AI Doctor Ads Banned”...MFDS, Tightens Labeling and Advertising Regulations

The use of AI(artificial intelligence) generated ‘fake experts' will be prohibited. AI-based recommendation advertising used in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries will be restricted to enhance consumer protection. On the 24th, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that a bill to amend the Act of Food Labeling and Advertising, Pharmaceutical Affairs act, Cosmetics act, act about Drug Managment, Food Sanitation act had passed the Plenary session of the National Assembly. This amendment is an action reflecting the recent changes in the public health and safety environment such as the increase of AI usage and drug-related crime, and instablity of mandatory medicines. The most noticeable change is about the regulation of advertisement based on AI. According to the amendment bill, the act of advertising food·medication by using AI generated images will be banned. Certain companies used AI generated images and audio of ‘professionals’ as their marketing strategy so far, but concerns that these ‘fake experts’ could mislead consumers have been reflected in the revision. The government aims to prevent using AI generated false and exaggerated advertisment, and expects the new regulation decrease the consumer damage. In particular, the new regulations are expected to intensify the credibility of advertising products that are especially important such as health functional foods and cosmetics. The pharmaceutical supply system has also been improved. Through the amendment to the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act, the government allowed themselves to ask companies to make National Essential Medicines in Korea. This is for obtaining essential medicines safely even in supply shortage or interruption, which is focused on extreme situations like infectious diseases or national disaster. The drug-crime response system will also be improved. The improved Narcotics Control Act allowed special investigative techniques like undercover investigations. Furthermore, to speed up the response of new spreading drugs, the notice period before labeling new substances as temporary controlled substances was shortened from a month to 14 days.Food safety management will also be strengthened. Due to the Food Sanitation Act Amendment, companies that make Food for Special Medical Purposes, like foods for patients, should choose a Person in Charge of Sanitary Control, and they must report Manufacturing Items Details to the relevant authorities. This is a response to a situation in which the number of consumers with special nutritional needs is increasing, aimed at improving the safety and management of these products. The industry sees this amendment as a ‘regulatory package’ intended to respond to the spread of AI technology and public health and safety issues. An industry official said “AI-based marketing has spread fast, which created concerns about a regulatory gap”, adding “This measure will increase the credibility of the advertising market, and at the same time, strengthen the government's role in public health and safety, including essential medicines and drug-crime control."This amendment will take effect after a grace period followed by the official announcement and related industries will be expected to be reviewing their marketing methods and overall business structure.▶원문 기사: “AI 의사 추천 광고 금지”…

"The booming AI chat trend… moving beyond 1:1 chats to the AI metaverse."

AI companies are moving beyond basic information-gathering chatbots. They’re now prioritizing interactive interfaces that layer their unique virtual worldviews with character values. The change comes as services that enable users to meet in original worldviews or as virtual characters that reflect personal tastes are becoming popular.According to market research firm “Research and Markets”, the global AI chat market size was valued at $4.24 billion (approximately 5.8 trillion KRW) in 2025. It is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 18.3% until 2033. In overseas markets, AI character-based chat services such as 'Character.AI' and 'Replika' are gaining popularity.Domestic IT companies also got into the race with advanced technologies and platformsUntil now, the only firm that managed to secure significant traffic was generative AI startup ScatterLab.The AI chat app Zeta by ScatterLab is a service where users can create and chat with AI characters based on the narratives and personalities they want. The result is a unique experience, as users feel like they are talking to a web novel lead in real-time. Its Monthly Active Users (MAU) exceeded 1.4 million this year.Naver is currently developing a story-telling AI chatbot service that uses the Naver Webtoon IP, following the launch of its existing character chat service. The aim is to strengthen the lock-in of users on current platforms by combining Naver Webtoon's already existing character fandom with AI technology. In addition to a single-character system for one-on-one talks, efforts are also underway to scale huge "worldviews" into AI-powered metaverses (3D virtual environments). On June 29, blockchain gaming company Nexus opened the closed beta test (CBT) for its AI metaverse platform ‘Stage’ and started raising creators.‘Stage’ is a platform for stories to be created through the natural interplay of many AI characters, virtual locations, intricate relationships, and surprises. With only a few lines of text input, such as background settings and characters, the AI generates a playable world view automatically. Nexus has laid out a roadmap for an 'open AI ecosystem' where you can play with and evolve the virtual worlds created by creators. An industry official said, "It is expected that domestic companies' attempts to expand their territory beyond one-on-one chat to a huge virtual world view and metaverse will settle into a new future growth engine."▶원문 기사: 거세지는 AI 챗 열풍…
